Guitar Authenticity Report

A paid online authenticity check for a guitar shop. Owners send details and photos and pay $12. The shop's expert checks the instrument against known factory details, AI helps turn those findings into a clear verdict, and the report arrives within 12 hours.

/ The Challenge

Where the hours were going.

Fake and misidentified guitars are everywhere: copies sold as the real thing, mismatched serial numbers, and replaced parts passed off as original. Owners and buyers want to know what they actually have, and a guitar shop that has handled plenty of fakes is exactly who they want to ask.

Answering properly takes an expert's time. Each instrument's specs, logos, hardware stamps, and construction have to be compared against what the factory actually made in that year. Writing it up so a non-expert can follow the reasoning takes even longer. The shop had the know-how, but no way to offer it at a price people would pay without losing money on every check.

/ What We Built

The AI-enhanced workflow.

We built a paid authenticity service on the shop's website, alongside its valuation report. A four-step wizard collects the guitar's details, what made the owner suspicious, and 4 to 20 photos, with a guide to the close-ups that matter most: headstock front and back, the serial number, labels, and hardware markings. Payment of $12 is taken up front.

This report works the opposite way to the valuation report. Here, the expert leads. For each instrument, AI first turns the shop's research into a checklist: the specs to compare, with the expected value for that model, and the authenticity markers to inspect. The expert then works through it, recording what they actually see and marking each item consistent, inconsistent, or unable to verify.

From the expert's findings, AI drafts the parts that take longest to write: the reasoning behind the verdict, a confidence statement, and a shareable certificate summary. The expert reviews and edits it, then sends the finished report.

Every report ends in one of four verdicts: genuine, likely genuine, inconclusive, or likely not authentic, with a confidence level and every red flag named. The offer is backed by two promises: the report arrives within 12 hours, and if the shop can't reach a confident answer, the customer gets a full refund.

/ Capabilities

What it does.

F-01

Guided photo upload

4 to 20 photos, with a shot guide, because clear close-ups decide whether a verdict is certain or inconclusive.

F-02

Model-specific checklist

AI turns research into a checklist of expected specs and markers for that exact model, ready for the expert.

F-03

Expert findings, AI write-up

The expert records what they observe. AI drafts the reasoning and certificate for the expert to edit.

F-04

Clear verdicts

Four verdict levels, a confidence rating, and named red flags, in a report the customer can save or share.

/ How We Built It

From friction to system.

  1. Step 01

    Find the next question

Owners asking what a guitar is worth often wonder whether it's genuine, too.

  2. Step 02

    Design the offer

A low flat price, a 12-hour promise, and a refund if there's no confident answer.

  3. Step 03

    Reuse what works

The ordering, photo, and payment flow came from the valuation report, so launch was fast.

  4. Step 04

    Keep the expert in front

AI prepares the checklist and drafts the write-up; the expert does the checking and makes the call.

/ Outcomes

What changed.

  • A second paid service, built on demand the shop already had
  • Expert time spent on checking, not on formatting and writing
  • Consistent reports with a clear verdict and named red flags
  • Sample reports, one genuine and one counterfeit, show buyers exactly what they'll get
/ Questions

Common questions.

Does AI decide whether a guitar is genuine?
No. The shop's expert inspects the photos, records the findings, and makes the call. AI prepares the checklist and helps write up the reasoning.
What happens if the photos aren't good enough?
The report says so and comes back inconclusive rather than guessing. If the shop can't reach a confident answer, the customer is refunded.
Is this a certified authentication?
No. It's an expert opinion with the reasoning shown, not a certificate from the manufacturer.
Does this only work for guitars?
No. Any business with real expertise in spotting fakes, such as sneakers, watches, handbags, sports memorabilia, or collectibles, can offer this kind of paid check.
